Many of us have a sense of connectedness with the
animal kingdom, Ewan Nicholson
explains why totems are a natural and age old phenomena.
Totems have always
united humans and nature.
According
to the dictionary, a totem is a natural object, especially an animal that is
assumed as an emblem of family or clan.
The interest in North American Indian cultures in recent times has
revealed a tradition of totems that is still practiced today. Many people have felt the power of totems, because
there is an underlying connection between people and nature in all cultures and
societies. Just because totemism has
gone out of practice in many places in the world does not mean that there has
not been a history of totems in those countries.

Over the last few years
there has been a rise in the public interest in the whole process of mediumship
- that is, communicating with people who have died. With programs such as John
Edwards' ‘Crossing Over', the whole process has been brought to our lounge
rooms. We seem both startled and skeptical as the medium communicates to loved
ones and gives messages from beyond the grave, in what can be tear jerking,
humorous or even to the point where we think "Wow! How did you know that?"

Like all the psychic arts, mediumship is a sensory experience that comes through the senses in different ways, either visually, or as a smell, a feeling or presence and so on. Also like the other psychic arts, it is not reliant on one sense, say, being able to clairvoyantly "see" the dead person or spirit, but a combination of sensory experiences which all add up to a reliable intuition that a genuine communication has been made.
